to preserve and protect the Little River watershed
The Hulsey Little
River Trust is a non-profit land trust made up of volunteers who are
passionate about protecting one of Alabama's most spectacular
places. The Little River is a unique river because it is the only
river that forms and flows almost its entire length on top of a
mountain. From the top of Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama, the
river rushes over Little River Falls and drops into a deep canyon.
Sometimes called the Grand Canyon of the East, in places the
canyon rim drops 500-600 feet from the bluffs to the canyon floor.
More than 100 rare or endangered plants and animals are found in the
area. The Little River and its tributaries provide clean water,
quality habitat, recreation and beauty. Hulsey Little River Trust
works to preserve and protect this amazing place for generations to
come.
With your help, the Hulsey Little River Trust
acquired 13 acres on Johnnies Creek
in the Little River watershed of northeast Alabama. Johnnies Creek is a major tributary of the Little River.
It flows into Little River Canyon just upstream of Canyon Mouth Park at the southern end of Little River
Canyon National Preserve. HLRT purchased 3 acres on the south side of Johnnies Creek in 2011 and
secured an additional 10-acre donation on the north side of Johnnies Creek in April of 2012. The 3-acre
parcel is accessible by paved road on the Little River Canyon National Preserve Scenic Drive. The property boasts a scenic overlook of Johnnies Creek
canyon, a spectacular view of the confluence of Johnnies Creek with the Little River and a small spring.
